Notes on the History of IAVSD

Milestones

16-18 July 1968: The 1st International Conference on Vehicle Mechanics was organised by H.K. Sachs in Detroit, Michigan, USA, with about 160 participants (proc. ed.: H.K. Sachs, Swets & Zeitlinger, 1969). The proceedings included survey-papers and research papers, an idea that has been adopted by IAVSD up to now.

H.K. Sachs: “The convening of the International Conference on the Mechanics of Vehicular Systems grew out of a sequence of discussions between eminent scientists in the field of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and research engineers active in the development of new types of transportation systems. … a genuine need existed for the convening of research scientists from universities and industrial research laboratories.”

6-9 September 1971: 2nd International Conference on Vehicle Mechanics at Paris VI University, Paris, France, chaired by P. Rapin (proc. eds.: P. Rapin and H.K. Sachs, Swets & Zeitlinger, 1973). The format of this conference has been continued for later IAVSD Symposia.

P. Rapin: “The format of the conference followed that of the first Detroit meeting, except for the idea of vacating the afternoon sessions for field trips to research corporations and user groups who featured new forms of transportation. Parallel technical sessions were held on the four major subjects, namely, Automobile Dynamics, Rail Vehicle Systems, Off-the-road Vehicle Systems and Ships and Hovercrafts. Invited lecture presentations on subjects of general interest to all attendees were given each day prior to the section meetings”.

1971: Initiation of the International Journal of Vehicle Mechanics and Mobility “Vehicle System Dynamics (VSD)” by the publisher Swets & Zeitlinger, Lisse, The Netherlands. Herbert K. Sachs and Hans B. Pacejka became the first editors in 1972. More details about VSD in Notes on the History of VSD.

12-15 August 1974: 3rd International Conference on Vehicle System Dynamics at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia, USA, chaired by R.L. Whitelaw (proc. ed.: H.K. Sachs, Swets & Zeitlinger, 1975). With respect to the two preceding conferences, the topic of the conference changed from Vehicle Mechanics to Vehicle System Dynamics.

18-22 August 1975: IUTAM Symposium on the Dynamics of Vehicles on Roads and on Railway Tracks at the Delft University, The Netherlands, chaired by H.B. Pacejka (proc. ed.: H.B. Pacejka, Swets & Zeitlinger, 1976). It was the initiative of W.T. Koiter, vice-president of IUTAM, to hold the vehicle dynamics symposium in Delft. The scientific committee was appointed by IUTAM. A total of 32 papers were presented during the scientific sessions. Besides, six state-of-the-art papers were made available in printed form only (published in VSD). In contrast to the previous first two conferences, where besides land vehicles also ships, amphibious vehicles and hovercrafts have been addressed, this IUTAM Symposium and later IAVSD Symposia particularly focus on the dynamics of vehicles on roads and tracks.

Subsequently IAVSD Symposia last for 5 days, SoA papers are published in a special issue of VSD, and the proceedings, or selected papers, are published after the symposium in a Suppl. to VSD, or later as ebooks. More details in Publications.

Delegates of IAVSD Symposium 1977 in Vienna
Technical discussions and relaxed social events in friendly atmosphere characterize all IAVSD Symposia. The photos date back to the foundation of IAVSD at the symposium 1977 in Vienna with W. Schiehlen and P. Lugner

1977: The 5th VSD-2nd IUTAM Symposium on the Dynamics of Vehicles on Roads and on Tracks was held at the Technical University Vienna, Austria, 19-23 September 1977. Due to the high competition for IUTAM Symposia sponsorship, IUTAM had decided to decline further applications on a regular basis from the vehicle dynamics community. Therefore, the International Association for Vehicle System Dynamics (IAVSD) was founded by decision of the scientific committee of the Symposium on 20 September 1977. On 22 September1977 the first Board of the Association was established, consisting of five officers and six trustees: H.K. Sachs, H.B. Pacejka, A.H. Wickens, M. Mitschke, A. Slibar; J.R. Ellis, P. Michelberger, A.D. de Pater, L. Segel, W. Schiehlen, A. Watari. Herbert K. Sachs became the first President, Hans B. Pacejka the first Secretary General of IAVSD.

Vehicle System Dynamics (VSD) started to serve as the official organ of the Association.

The scientific committee of the Symposium was appointed by IUTAM and included M. Apetaur (CSSR), K. Desoyer (Austria), J.R. Ellis (U.K.), P. Michelberger (Hungary), M. Mitschke (F.R.G.), H.B. Pacejka (Netherlands), A.D. de Pater (Netherlands), H.K. Sachs (USA), L. Segel (USA), A. Slibar, chairman (Austria), A. Watari (Japan) and A.H. Wickens (U.K.).

A total of 38 papers were presented during the scientific sessions and four state-of-the-art papers were published in a special issue of VSD.

1978: The Association became affiliated to the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) in 1978. W.T. Koiter became the first representative of IUTAM in IAVSD and H.B. Pacejka of IAVSD in IUTAM.

1979: 6th IAVSD Symposium on the Dynamics of Vehicles on Roads and on Tracks, Berlin, Germany, was chaired by H.-P. Willumeit. The scientific committee of the Symposium was now appointed by the IAVSD Board from 1977.

1980: The Constitution of the Association was prepared with the help of A.D. de Pater and adopted by the Board and published in VSD 9, 6, in 1980 and later amended (VSD 11, 1 and 12, 6). The Constitution was revised and published in the IAVSD Newsletter of August 1988. The current version of the Constitution is published on the IAVSD homepage.

1981: The 2nd IAVSD Board was elected for the 7th IAVSD Symposium with 5 officers and 8 trustees according to the new Constitution. The active period of the board was extended from four to six years at the board meeting of the 8th IAVSD Symposium in 1983. Therefore, the next IAVSD Board was inaugurated in 1989, subsequently every six years.

For the first time, parallel sessions were held on road and rail. However, the first and last sessions were held jointly in order to capitalise on the topics of common interest to both road and rail.

1985: Unlike previous two Symposia the 9th IAVSD symposium was organized with joint morning sessions every day and parallel sessions on road and rail topics in the afternoon. The reason for this increase in joint sessions was a desire to give more emphasis to the idea of bringing road and rail scientists together.

1987: A novelty in the organization of the 10th IAVSD Symposia was the introduction of the poster sessions in the afternoon the third day. The reason was to increase the number of the papers presented and to enable closer personal discussions in small groups.

1988: A Newsletter was introduced by H.B. Pacejka, which was distributed to the members of IAVSD and formed a means for members to communicate with each other. Until 1996 four more Newsletters appeared, edited by R.S. Sharp.

1989: Introduction of the Best Paper Award at the 11th IAVSD Symposium.

1992: IAVSD supported the initial and later International Symposium on Advanced Vehicle Control (AVEC’92) and a cooperation has been started, which was renewed in 2001. It was agreed that IAVSD Symposia will take place on uneven years, AVEC Symposia on even years. Many special issues of VSD have been published with selected best papers of AVEC.

1997: For the first time a website for the 15th IAVSD Symposium was established to provide additional information on the internet.

1999: The logo of the 16th IAVSD Symposia in Pretoria became the official logo of IAVSD.

2002: The website iavsd.org of IAVSD was launched by M. Valasek.

2010: IAVSD and ATZ agreed on a cooperation between IAVSD and the International Munich Chassis Symposium (chassis.tech plus).

Realisation of Objectives and Reporting

To achieve the Objectives of the Association, bi-annual symposia have been organised since 1977, proceedings made available and state-of-the-art papers published in VSD. Members of the Association regularly publish their findings in VSD which enables mutual benefit. In addition, a large number of workshops, colloquia, courses and summer schools have been held or supported to promote the science of vehicle system dynamics. Last but not least, cooperations with other organizers of conferences and organizations related to the vehicle system dynamics have been established. This implements in particular Section 2 and 3 of the Constitution.

A complete list of all IAVSD Symposia is given below, as well as a list of workshops, colloquia and other supported events. For published proceedings it is referred to Publications.

The activities of the Association are reported in the annual Report of IUTAM by the Secretary General. Records on matters of IAVSD (transactions, minutes, reports, abstracts, obituaries) may be found e.g. in VSD, 8, 2-3; 9, 2; 9, 6; 11, 1; 12, 1-3; 12, 6; 14, 1-3; 15, 1; 16, 4; 18, 6; 19, 1; 20, 1; 20 3-4, 21, 1; 37,1; 38, 5; 46, 1-2; 52, 4, or in the minutes of IAVSD board meetings, archived by the Secretary General.

Notes on the History of VSD

In 1968, the late Professor Herbert K. Sachs organized the First International Conference on Vehicle Mechanics at Wayne State University in Detroit. In the course of the publication of the Proceedings of this conference, the idea of creating a new international journal in this field was born.

When Professor Sachs visited the Netherlands and plans with Professor H.C.A. van Eldik Thieme, the doctor father of Dr. Ir. Hans Pacjeka (besides A.D. de Pater), were discussed, the result was the journal VEHICLE SYSTEM DYNAMICS (VSD) – International Journal of Vehicle Mechanics and Mobility published by Swets & Zeitlinger.

Picture of Herbert K. Sachs and Hans B. Pacejka
Founders and first Editors of VSD: Herbert Konrad Sachs and Hans Bastiaan Pacejka

The first issue of VSD was published in May 1972, with Herbert K. Sachs as the Editor-in-Chief and Hans Pacejka as Associate Editor. Statements from the Editorial Policy of VSD, Vol.1, Issue 1:

The journal “Vehicle System Dynamics – International Journal of Vehicle Mechanics and Mobility” has been established for the purpose of serving the scientific community whose field of interest lies in the study of vehicle motion. […] Vehicle System Dynamics is that branch of technological science which is concerned with the force-time-space – relationship inherent in the motion of vehicle systems and their component parts.

[…] the journal attempts to contribute to the field of knowledge by publishing research investigations. Of particular interest are research papers on theoretical and applied mechanics which carry strong implications of their usefulness in the study of vehicular motion. The publication shall include research investigations on all forms of land vehicles, amphibious vehicles, ships, air cushion vehicles and hovercraft. […]

The manuscripts may contain the results and discussion of a complete research investigation or a critical survey of existing literature or a brief note on a research topic of general interest to the readers of the journal, or simply critical discussions related to the publication of an article. Accordingly, manuscripts shall be classified as 1) research paper, 2) literature survey, 3) brief note, 4) commentary.

and from the same issue about the future trend:

[…] it is clear, that the development of systems dynamics, theory of controls, and structural dynamics all play a fundamental role in the further development of means of transportation. In the future some of the aspects of vehicle systems engineering will concern the preservation of the rather rapidly depleting fossil fuels which will lead us to the development of drastically redesigned power packages[…]. The problems of the future are oriented towards the inclusion of ‘man’ into the system cycle of the mechanism which he operates. This poses an array of very interesting new problems, among them that of traffic control. If man is considered as part of the system, then it must be possible to replace him by an equivalent physical model for whatever role he may assume within the system. And again one finds analogies with the mathematically well founded concepts of dynamics.

[…] The journal will look towards the future rather than the past in the fervent hope that dynamic problems in the mechanics of vehicles will be solved and thereby provide the public with cleaner, speedier and more efficient means of transportation.

“The journal will look towards the future”, has severed as a leitmotif to the editors of the journal over the years. Interestingly, the topic of the first paper published was on “Development of Vehicle-following Behavior for Automated Vehicle Systems”. VSD was and shall be a source of scientific investigations, which may help engineers in application of new ideas that might not be fully applicable at the time published. A better understanding of the complex physical “force-time-space – relationship inherent in the motion of vehicle systems” remains paramount interest of the journal. The two other articles of the first issue focus cornering stability and tyre modelling. The first articles on the dynamics of railway vehicles have been published in 1975, on motorcycles in 1976.

The inclusion of “land vehicles, amphibious vehicles, ships, air cushion vehicles and hovercraft” in the editorial statement of the first issue follows the conferences on vehicle mechanics initiated and organized by Professor Sachs. But already articles in the early volumes of VSD address particularly the dynamics of road and railway vehicles, with Hans Pacejka as the other editor of VSD. This focus became obvious in the organisation of the “IUTAM Symposium on the Dynamics of Vehicles on Roads and on Railway Tracks” in 1975 by Hans Pacejka, and subsequent IAVSD Symposia.

With Vol. 3, Hans Pacejka became Editor-in-Chief besides K.H. Sachs in 1973.

In 1977, the International Association for Vehicle System Dynamics (IAVSD) was established at the 5th VSD-2nd IUTAM Symposium on the Dynamics of Vehicles on Roads and on Tracks held at the Technical University Vienna, Austria. Since then, transactions and minutes of IAVSD Board meetings, reports of symposia and workshops, as well as obituaries for members of IAVSD of outstanding merits have been published in VSD. Most of the proceedings of the biennial IAVSD symposium have been published as Supplements to the journal together with its State-of-the-Art papers. VSD became the official organ of the Association. It was the start of a strong relation between VSD and IAVSD which has continued until now.

After the untimely death of Professor Sachs in 1988, J. Karl Hedrick became his successor, and Peter Lugner the successor of Hans Pacejka in 1990. Almost two decades have passed since the inception and establishment of VSD in 1972, and Hans Pacejka noted:

The journal has developed itself as an important and well accepted medium for our scientific community. lt has become the official organ of the International Association for Vehicle System Dynamics (IAVSD). […] The journal must keep and improve its position as an important reference where the staff of well-established research institutes publish their new findings and where promising budding scientists begin to present their work.

The actual team of editor-in-chiefs is most indebted to the great enthusiasm and expertise of the founders and succeeding editors, and last but not least, to the strong support of IAVSD building the fundament of excellent authors and reviewers.

On the cover of the journal, VSD is still quoted as the official organ of IAVSD. Coming editors are encouraged to preserve this original intention of the founders, its unique format and recognisable brownish colour, even though generations of publishing managers have been amazed.

In 2004, Taylor & Francis took over Swets & Zeitlinger and became the new publisher of VSD.
